The Pillar House Trad Music Session

Every Sunday evening at 6pm we welcome acclaimed Trad Musicians,  John Wynne on Flute & Frank Kelly on Piano Accordion, both from Roscommon who lead our weekly session.   All musicians are welcome and each Sunday we have musicians both young and old who  join in the session.  John & Frank are regularly joined by another renowned Roscommon Flute player, Patsy Hanley, and they’ve even been joined by an Irish Rugby International, Robbie Henshaw on the box.

The Pillar House Session has proven to be a great way to foster confidence in young musicians who are always welcomed and encouraged.  We have seen the Session develop during the last two years and it has now become a well know date on the local Irish Music calendar.

September 2013 saw our first Irish Music & Sean Nos Dancing Workshops Day which was a massive success with over 80 students attending music and dance classes throughout the day.   A monster open session that night finished off a super day.

In September 2014, we are honouring the late Larry Reynolds.   Larry emigrated from Ahascragh, just outside Ballinasloe to Boston in the early ’50’s with his fiddle under his arm and became one of the most influential Irish Traditional Music exponents in North America.  The home which he shared with his wife Phyllis and their six children in Waltham, MASS. was a house of music and musicians and singers were always welcome.   Larry maintained strong links with Ahascragh & Ballinasloe and visited his family here regularly.

On Friday, 12th September there will be a Gala Concert in memory of Larry in Ballinasloe Town Hall.  The line-up includes friends of Larry who he has played music with on both sides of the pond:    Joe Burke, Matt Keane, Don Stiffe, Johnny O’Halloran, Tommy McCarthy, John Wynne, Frank Kelly & Patsy Hanley, Colm Gannon, Frank Hession & Bobby Kilkenny and members of Club Damhsa and Sean Nos, Ballinasloe.  Tickets are available from The Pillar House for €15,  Concessions €12

Saturday 13th September is workshops day with music workshops in  Tin Whistle, Flute, Fiddle, Banjo, Concertina & Piano Accordion from a superb line up of tutors:   John Wynne, John McEvoy, Angelina Carberry, Jacinta McEvoy, Sharon Connell.

There will also be Sean Nós Dancing Workshops with Liam Ó’Scanláin and Sean Nós Singing Workshops with Nollaig NíLaoire.

Throughout the day there will be the opportunity for us to use our cúpla focail with a Ciorcal Comhrá, conversational Irish on a casual basis.   During the day there will also be craft exhibitions in Basket Weaving and Patchwork.

When all the workshops finish there will be a Tutors Recital at 6pm, followed by an Open Session at 7pm which will go on to the late hours.

Sunday, 14th September will bring about the conclusion of the weekend with a Lunchtime “Boxty” Session which will start at 2pm.  This will be guaranteed to be a great finish to a full weekend of Irish Music, Heritage & Culture.
